COMDEX - FALL 2001: Las Vegas, Nevada: November 12-15, 2001

Investigated the current state of computers and telecommunications technologies.  Due to 911 impacts the industry witnessed a dismal attendance, not only in attendees, but also vendors.   Microsoft was there with usual promises of the so-called greatness of XP platform.  Users were unimpressed with the over all flavor of the convention.   All time high for attendance was over half a million for the week.  This year's attendance, depending on whom was talking, 50,000 to 80,000.  Dot COM's were noticeably absent.  Interest mainly focused on safeguard of data and Internet access.  WIFI (wireless fiber) starting to compete with the shorter ranged Bluetooth technology.  Digital input and output devices continue to be refined by the big hitters (i.e. Olympus, Cannon, Hp … etc)  … Sophisticated multimedia packages are starting to emerge, with a focus on business applications.  DVD-RW is available, but still too many formats.  Three major competing formats for the writing protocol.  All manufactures appear to be able read commercial DVDs, but interoperability between vendors is a big issue.

COMDEX - FALL 2000: Las Vegas, Nevada: November 11 - 13, 2000

Internet everything.  If a company doesn't have a website, it doesn't have a presence.  Net server software and hardware is a hot topic, along with security for the web.  Linux is the poor man/woman's entry into open software push and direct attack against Microsoft's dominance.  Little support for government interference in commercial markets.  Novel and NetWare seem to be dying on the vine.  Still a large installed base, but Microsoft's Internet Explorer is winning the market.  All hardware and software focused on web based penetration.  The mobile users and PDA's are being catered to with multiple access methods.  Bluetooth is still hanging around, but no real stampede for the product.   CISCO is in full stride and putting together excellent routers/switches.
